Tril in a nutshell
Tril is a mobile app for finding recommendations from your friends. Based on our most engaged trilers' feedback, we improved our retention with new users.
Context
Tril is a mobile app where you can find movies, music, restaurants, and series recommended by your friends. I was Tril’s first designer, we launched it on TechCrunch Disrupt 2015.
Framing the problem
We noticed on Mixpanel that our users were collecting their favorite things, but other actions such as “re-tril” or “save” weren’t showing good numbers. We decided to re-think the experience of discovering new things so we could improve our retention numbers.
Research
In order to figure out how users discover and save stuff, we run a poll in Typeform that was sent to the segment of the most active trillers using Intercom.
Design sprint
I organized a short Design Sprint with all the team, but I wanted the users’ feedback to be part of the brainstorming activities. So I printed out some of the users’ quotes and had them included in the activities.
Wireframing
We prioritized new ideas and focused on a feature we could implement in the following sprint: search for things. We prototyped different versions of this idea, shared it with our users and asked them to vote for their favorite.
Prototyping
For prototyping the tab bar animation I decided to use Principle, which allows me to manage the acceleration of the curves. As I shared the curve’s settings with the ios team, it was easier to match the final version to the prototype.
